Indalo Hotels & Leisure Acquires Protea Hotel by Marriott Mahikeng

Johannesburg, South Africa – 02 September 2025Indalo Hotels & Leisure, a subsidiary of Afrirent Holdings, is proud to announce the acquisition of the 99-room Protea Hotel by Marriott Mahikeng, effective 02 September 2025. This acquisition marks a major milestone in the company’s strategic growth and strengthens its footprint in South Africa’s hospitality market. The acquisition follows a strategic realignment by the previous owner, Glasshouse Trading, creating an opportunity for Indalo Hotels & Leisure to further its expansion efforts. Unlike transactions that focus solely on acquiring management rights, Indalo has secured full ownership of the property, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the hospitality sector. Since entering into a lease agreement to manage the Fountains Hotel in Cape Town in November 2021, Indalo Hotels & Leisure has steadily built a diverse collection of hospitality assets across the country. These include Skukuza Golf Club, Ba-Phalaborwa Resort and Golf Club (previously known as Hans Merensky), and Mane by the Sea Restaurant on These Island, Knysna. The addition of Protea Hotel by Marriott Mahikeng aligns with the company’s strategy of growing its presence in key regions while maintaining high standards of service and operational excellence. The South African hospitality sector is experiencing rapid growth, driven by an increase in both domestic and international tourism. This acquisition capitalizes on the rising demand for premium accommodations in key regions, particularly in Mahikeng, which serves as a vital administrative and economic hub in the North West Province. The hotel’s strategic location and limited competition in the high-end market position it for long-term success. Kevin Burley, Group Operations Director at Indalo Hotels & Leisure, said: “Acquiring Protea Hotel by Marriott Mahikeng is a significant step in our vision to establish a distinctly South African hospitality brand. The region’s growing demand for upscale accommodations, coupled with the hotel’s operational strength, makes it an ideal addition to our portfolio. We’re excited about the opportunity to enhance the guest experience in Mahikeng and contribute to the area’s economic growth.” Indalo Hotels & Leisure’s approach to growth is centered on sustainable expansion and providing exceptional service. The acquisition of Protea Hotel by Marriott Mahikeng offers a unique opportunity to strengthen the company’s presence in an underserved market while delivering added value to both guests and the local community. The company plans to leverage its expertise in hotel management to enhance the hotel’s operations, contributing to the development of the region. Senzo Tsabedze, Executive Group Chairman of Afrirent Holdings, said: “This acquisition underscores Afrirent’s commitment to business diversification and capitalizing on high-growth opportunities. We’re excited about the positive impact that Protea Hotel by Marriott Mahikeng will have not just on our business, but also on the local economy. We’re dedicated to creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and fostering long-term development in the communities where we operate.” Afrirent Holdings is a 100% black female-owned, Level-1 BEE company that is deeply committed to transformation and inclusivity within the South African hospitality sector. The acquisition of Protea Hotel by Marriott Mahikeng through Indalo Hotels & Leisure further supports the company’s mission to increase black ownership and empower communities through sustainable practices and job creation. Indalo Hotels & Leisure plans to continue expanding its presence across key regions, making further investments in high-growth opportunities and sustainable business practices. “As we continue to expand our portfolio, we aim to position Indalo Hotels & Leisure as a leader in the South African hospitality market. We’re focused on creating memorable experiences for our guests while ensuring that sustainability, inclusivity, and exceptional service are at the heart of everything we do. We want our guests to feel a genuine connection to South Africa’s unique culture and hospitality,” said Burley.
